Tick Fest 2008

Please check your arms and legs for stray bugs. I spent the afternoon in the urgent care center with swollen elbow and knuckle joints, and tick parts being removed from my arms. I don't wish it on anyone and am now the biggest anti-tick voice you'll ever hear on this board.

Does anyone swear by a particular product? I brought 7% deet and ended up using Nicole's 40%, but it obviously didn't work. I'm ready to buy out my nearest drug store.

Aiee, Rae! That's awful!

I was using Deep Woods Off, and so far as I can tell came out without any ticks attached.

Hope you feel better soon!

3M makes an insect-repellant cream. It's about 70% deet, but lasts for many hours due to the rest being something or other which does time release.

I think the version of deep woods of with the yellow cap is the same thing.

I've taken to carrying deep woods off wipes - they are small enough that they don't get in the way, and if I realize partway through the day I forgot I don't have to go get a spray bottle.

Aha. Found the name for the good 3M stuff: Ultrathon.

When they say it lasts 8-12 hours, they aren't lying.

You can get yourself some 100% Deet (dee dee) in a tiny little squirt bottle. It's meant to be applied to clothes and areas like the bottom of your pants and tops of socks where ticks might jump on while you're tromping through tall grass. I don't think it's meant to be used on skin, though I haven't suffered any major harmful side effects from slathering it on.

I got a tick at the 2005 spook walk...very bad. Yeah, you don't want to get more. I'll be another anti-tick voice.

Sorry you got "ticked" Rae...in over five years at Legends, I never had any run ins with them. I did get an infected hand from a black fly bite tho, and that was with oodles of bug repellant on....can't remember what strentgh it was tho.

Too bad they don't have Frontline for humans like they do our pets.

Eek! that's stinky... this should be a reminder to everyone! check yourselves before you go to bed every night at an event... if you catch ticks before a 24 hour mark, it drastically reduces the chance of contracting lymes disease.

i'm super paranoid and i use deep woods off... on myself, my clothes and my hair. anything between 30-40% deet should be enough to keep the bastards off of you... though the 100% stuff that kim mentioned is always an option. ^_~

Just so all know, only Deer ticks carry Lyme disease, they are tiny about the size of an apple seed. The larger ticks hurt and can cause an infection, but don't carry the Lyme thankfully. If you are bitten by a Lyme infected tick a red bulls eye like rash usually appears shortly after being bitten around the bite.

All this talk about ticks has given me the heebee geebees....ewwwwww.

I actually got Lyme disease at Spring 3 last year... so it is certainly around the site. If you get sick within about 30 days of a Legeds event, even if you did not get the bullseye around a tick bite I recommend getting a blood test. If you catch it early, they stick you on antibiotics for 3 weeks and its all better. So - not to freak anyone out, but be careful about it.
