Midwinter Ceremony

by Chief Slays a Fox (Steven Weinacht) (in-game)
on Tue Jan 17 22:20:44 2012

Chief Slays a Fox invites the town of Holdfast to join in celebration of the Bear tribe Midwinter Ceremony. The Ceremony will be held on the 50th day of the Cycle of Ice, 1612. The festival will be held in our timber hall and barrow, but Lord Carnifex has graciously offered to lend some of his people to aide in serving the citizens of Holdfast so that the members of the local tribe may spend more time with their family.

When the Great Bear appears in the sky directly overhead, we wait for the New Moon to be seen. This is when the spiritual year begins. We then wait 5 days after the new moon to begin the ceremony. The celebration lasts for 9 days with many traditional events, as well as the choosing of new council members for the next year. The first day of the celebration is traditionally a time when we invite our friends and neighbors to join us.

Chief Slays a Fox would like to invite the citizens of Holdfast to join him and his clan of the Bear Tribe to this grand event.

You will witness traditional dances, offerings to the Spirits and the Creator, games, and you may even be asked to take part in the Dreamsharing ceremony.

As we settle into the heart of winter, we take stock of what we have, what we need, and the needs of our friends and family. With that in mind you will be asked to join in our Barter Auction. Nothing goes to waste in winter and this auction reflects that. A member of the tribe will stand and present an item that has served them well but they do not need at the time. Other members of the tribe will then offer up their own possessions in exchange for what is offered. Money may be offered, but the winner is the one who has the items most appealing or useful to the presenter. You can bid anything! Boots, socks, cloaks, food, blankets, preserved fruit! Feel free to bid whatever you like.

At this time, we also honor our craftsmen and artists at this time of snows when we have so much time to admire what they have created. In celebration of this, we will hold a Celebration of Craftsmanship and invite our guests to participate with a warm heart. Items of all trades, from armor and jewelry to masks and weapons, will be accepted. These items will be displayed in a place of prominence to be admired by all. All present will then vote on the item which holds the most merit to them, and the creator of the item will be well rewarded.

With these traditional events, we have also arranged for games of chance more well known to our city-dwelling friends.

CP Transfer

by Steven Weinacht (out-of-game)
on Mon Jan 9 18:33:30 2012

In order to keep the progression of the game and the median power level of characters in check, the Legends Management is re-instituting its CP Transfer Policy.

When large numbers of character points from existing PC's pour over to their friends who are new characters, the entire power level of the game can be thrown off. As many of you have mentioned in your PEL's that monsters are too weak for you and you don't have a challenge we have decided to limit the number of Points that you are allowed to transfer or have transferred to you from another Player.

We want the balance of the game to be towards the lower end of the spectrum so we do not have to send out monsters with crazy stats to challenge you all.

With that being said, the maximum number of character points that you can transfer to another player or have transferred to you in a season is 3.
If you have any questions or comments please use the Legends Contact Link.

"A bum rolls into town hoping to start over, only to find his adopted city saturated in violence and ruled by a vicious crime lord known as the Drake."

A description for most characters making their way to Holdfast?

Or...the Description for 'Hobo with a Shotgun' on the Netflix site?

Need a LARP fix before Spring 1?

by Beth Baniszewski (out-of-game)
on Sun Jan 8 22:06:07 2012

I'm running a 4 hour long LARP on March 3rd at Intercon. Intercon is a 3 day convention of 1 to 6 hour long theater-style LARPs in Chelmsford, MA.

My game is called Power Ballad: Total Eclipse of the Eternal Flame. It's set at a high school prom in 1989. Plots revolve around flirting with your high school crushes, settling bitter rivalries, and grooving to lots of 80s music. The only combat is dance combat.

If you want to learn more, email me or visit the website here: http://www.interactiveliterature.org/L/Schedule.php?action=25&EventId=365&RunId=706

Winter Feast!

by John Of Legends (out-of-game)
on Fri Dec 30 08:46:33 2011

Hello All,

I hope the holidays are treating everyone well. Looking at the message board it seems that the cabin fever is beginning to settle in for a few character of Areth. Well, to this we offer a brief reprieve.

The winter feast will be on Sunday Feb 19th this year, apologies to those who were hoping for a move to Saturday. There will be no BGS for the winter feast this year, but please enter them asap after the feast, as things will be forgotten by the time we kick off in the spring. The Chicken and Beef options are the same as last year. After some conversation with restaurant management, we have elected to serve Spaghetti as a vegetarian option this year.

I cannot wait to see you all again, these winters are too long. Please check back for our in-character announcement of the feast. See you there!

John

I like to play games

by The Doomsayer (in-game)
on Mon Dec 26 16:47:11 2011

To all the people out there who think I'm not a threat, let me be perfectly clear on something, I can destroy the entire town of Holdfast without blinking an eye. If you even think on trying to have the seers try and tell you who and what I am, I will start your destruction faster than you can say Li's a drunk. That means if you Synovea, yes you, I know all about you even some things you may not want other's to know, try and warn those who may have a slight chance of stopping my plan, I will see to it that you will never warn others of any danger ever again, in other terms I will basically destroy all those you hold dear to your heart. I warn you, I am not a person to mess with. Just ask that fool Mobius, he thinks just because he is all powerful, yeah right, he can stop me, Hey genius, did you manage to find me yet? Not!! Seriously sir you may find a clue in a place you haven't looked yet. Man, is this ever boring, One more thing, If Sir Dar reads this tell him he messed with the wrong person. IF he thinks just because he was the former Captain of the guard doesn't mean the past is forgotten. Also, House Sylvia, Your time is coming up very soon. In the name of the Darkness I curse you all! Spell Packets for Sale

by Bradley Packets (out-of-game)
on Thu Dec 22 12:31:53 2011

Hi guys.

I’ve never had the pleasure of playing Legends (since I live down in Georgia), but for a dozen years now, I’ve made spell packets for the LARP I play. In fact, I make what many have told me are the best spell packets they’ve ever used, so I’ve decided to start selling them.

I’d love for you to visit my website, www.BradleyPackets.com , to see what I have to offer. I know that anyone can make spell packets, but my hope is that you’ll see the value in my work and the benefits of using my packets.

Bradley Packets are as uniform in size and shape as humanly possible. They are designed to be firm enough to give you a consistent, stable mass to throw, yet have enough "give" to allow the seeds to shift on impact, flattening the head and softening the blow of a hard or a full-force throw. This uniformity helps you throw your spells with a greater degree of speed and accuracy. My hope is that this will ultimately increase the joy you take from your LARPing experience.

As a gesture of my sincerity, I’d like to make the following offer: I will ship 20 free spell packets to the first Legends staff member to contact me with a mailing address. When you use them at your next event, your players will be able to judge if they are an improvement to the packets you normally use. All I ask in return is that if you like them, you tell your players where they can buy them (and perhaps post my website on your Links page). If you have any criticisms or suggestions as to how I can make my packets better, I’d welcome your feedback.

If you Like my Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/BradleyPackets ), you’ll receive occasional updates on promotional sales and special, limited-quantity packets made with particularly desirable fabric (flames, skulls, etc), which will be for sale on my Etsy page ( www.BradleyPackets.etsy.com ). For those who are regularly on Etsy, please add me to your Circle so you’ll be the first to know when I list some of those awesome packets.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me ( BradleyPackets@gmail.com ). Thanks to everyone for your consideration and support!

Rules Clarifications - PLEASE READ

by Shannon Gmyrek (out-of-game)
on Tue Dec 20 22:06:28 2011

Hello to our dear players!

We on staff have noticed some ongoing rules issues that we wanted to touch on to clarify for all of you. These are points that may have been unclear for a while but that we are noticing that they are coming up quite a bit lately. Please read these points and if you have any questions or concerns, write an email via the Contact link rather than here on the forums. We don’t want this to turn into a huge flame war or anything like that. This is meant to be a clarification so that it is not a problem in game anymore, and since with owner changes over the years rules have also changed dramatically in some cases. Please note that we will consider this an official ruling and will consider continuing to play the rules this way an instance of cheating. In general, if you are not clear on a rule, please ask. Ignorance is not an excuse for cheating. Making assumptions or declining to clarify because you might not like the answer is not playing within the spirit of the game. We are making this post not to call anyone out or point fingers, it is so that the game can be played in the way it was intended and can remain balanced and work well for everyone involved.

1) Stacking: Spell Shields, Stone Skins and other such protective skills DO NOT stack with themselves unless stated. You can have ONE protective armor and ONE spell protection on you at any one time. Currently, no PC and very few NPCs have the skill to stack these spells. If you are not sure if a skill stacks, ask. This skill will always be stated in the incant of the spell.

2) Torso Hits: Imagine a Barbie doll. Now imagine ripping the arms, legs and head off that doll. That is the target area for a legal torso shot (excluding, obviously, the groin area).

3) “No Fighting in the Tavern”: This was meant as a safety rule, because the Tavern area is small, crowded and occasionally has live fire. This is NOT meant to be a “safe zone” where damage and skills do not count. Staff will try and avoid fighting in the crowded tavern. This does not mean it is a safe place where fighting never happens. It also does not mean staff will not incite fighting in the Tavern as a storytelling device. If you feel it is unsafe, please call a “Caution.”

4) Restore Spirit: This does not restore your Vitality or Skills. Neither does a visit to Death, unless SPECIFICALLY stated by the Aspect you see. If the Aspect does not say that your skills and vitality are restored, you do not get them back.

5) “Resist”: If you have a skill that allows you to resist something that is thrown at you, you MUST state “Resist”. Think of it as the “counter-spell”. (This rule is precluded in very special cases, if you have a skill in question please talk to staff.)

6) Spell Incants: You MUST fully state the spell name for a spell to be valid. Again, this is an incant. You CANNOT cast a spell without fully stating the spell name, be it offensive OR defensive. (i.e., If you get hit by a spell you MUST recast “Spell Shield” before resisting another spell, even if you have 50 Spell Shields “banked.”) You must also INCANT the spell before throwing it.

7) Spell Strike: Damage from a spell strike is two-fold: 1 damage for the weapon + the appropriate damage from the spell. Spell damage from a spell strike acts exactly as a spell would, i.e., it affects the torso, no matter where the weapon actually hit. The weapon damage is taken to the location where the actual hit occurred.

8) Alchemy Tags: You MUST read the tag from alchemy every time! Sometimes, tags have added effects or are labeled incorrectly. You cannot take the effect on the tag without reading it fully.

9) Zero Vitality: If you go unconscious, then get back up either after five minutes or after being tended, you cannot run or fight until being healed. At 0 vitality, you are in a weakened state. In a weakened state you may walk, not run, and may only wield a dagger sized weapon, nothing larger. Toughness negates the weakened state effects.

10) Benediction/Malediction Disks: These disks dissipate between Moons. You cannot “save up” disks between events.

A death in the LARPing community

There was a 5 alarm house fire in Canaan, NH early this morning. One perished. My friend, Craig Disbrow.

Craig is the brother of Andy Disbrow. Andy runs the Craethorn event in Grafton for Realms.

Those of you who know Andy and would like to send your condolences, please let me know via emal. erikagermanknits@gmail.com This happened, not 24 hours ago, so we don't know everything and Andy and Mary Lou need some time to get over the initial shock. But I'll be sure to reply once I have an addy.

...Of course, half of you won't open this message because of the subject line. But, for those who decided to open the message anyway and damn the consequences, I have two things to say:

1. Final death.

2. I'm finally posting the text of the book "A is for Alchemy" that I wrote for Spring 3 this year. Come see the illustrated and calligraphed version next time you stop by the shop!

(And yes, Feldor does indeed have a beryllium core. He's like a piñata.)

- Joy/Kael

-------------

A is for Alchemy, sold at the store; B is for Beryllium, Feldor's core.

C is for Components, the things that we study; D is for Drain, to use on a buddy.

E is for Elixir, the first one is free; F is for Final, so don't steal a recipe.

G is for the Guild, whose laws we obey; H is for Hobgoblin, our most frequent prey.

I is for Ice Dart (so don't touch the axe); J is for June Bugs and sealing wax.

K is for Killing the flowers we find; L is for Lying to the people who mind.

M is for Master, who teaches the Art; N is for Nomwort, for use in a tart?

No wait, that's wrong. Eating shrooms isn't wise. It's Nemwort, not Nomwort, stop eating it, guys.

O is for Ogre. Bring us its heart. P is for Politics, the unavoidable part.

Q is for Questions about what we do; R is for Recipes we cannot tell you.

S is for Secrets and knowledge and lore; T is for Traps on the Alchemy door.

U is for Undertaking new elixir trials; V is for Venoms and Vapors and Vials,

W is for Witchwood and trees and florals; X is for Xan, who claims he has morals.

Y is for You, sampling our drugs; Z is for Zoology, come see our bugs.

Welcome to Holdfast's fine Alchemy store; You can try one for free, but you'll come back for more.
